How we test

We buy everything ourselves

We purchase every topper anonymously at full retail price. We accept no free samples and no sponsorships, so there is no pressure to return a favour with a higher ranking.

At least two weeks of real sleep

Each topper is slept on for a minimum of two weeks across different sleepers (side, back and combination) and on different mattress types, so our impressions reflect long-term use rather than a first-night feel.

Seven weighted criteria

We score each topper on the things that actually change your sleep, then weight them toward what matters most for value:

Topper buying guide

Thickness

2″ adds a noticeable comfort layer; 3″ is the sweet spot for pressure relief and reviving a worn mattress; 4″ suits heavier sleepers or very firm beds. Below 2″ you mostly get a surface feel rather than real support.

Foam type

Gel-infused memory foam contours and sleeps cooler than plain memory foam. Convoluted “egg-crate” foam is cheaper and more breathable but offers less support and durability.

Cooling

Look for gel infusion plus a breathable cover (bamboo or Tencel). Plain memory foam without cooling features is the most common cause of “sleeps hot” complaints.

Cover

A removable, washable cover keeps the topper hygienic and extends its life. Check whether it is included — some premium brands charge extra for it.

Certifications

CertiPUR-US® verifies the foam is made without harmful chemicals; OEKO-TEX® certifies the textiles. Dual certification is the gold standard.

Trial & warranty

Foam feel is personal, so a sleep trial with free returns matters. A 5-year warranty signals the brand expects the foam to hold up.

FAQ

Can a topper fix back pain?

It can help. A supportive 3″ memory-foam topper improves spinal alignment and relieves pressure points, which eases many people’s back and joint pain — though it cannot fix a structurally failing mattress.

How thick should my topper be?

3 inches suits most adults and is our recommended all-rounder. Choose 2″ for a subtle softening and 4″ if you are heavier or your mattress is very firm.

Will a topper make me sleep hot?

Plain memory foam can. Choose a gel-infused foam with a breathable bamboo cover — like our top pick — to avoid heat build-up.

How do I keep it in place?

Look for secure-fit elastic straps or anchor bands. A fitted sheet over the topper also helps hold it down.

How do I clean a topper?

Spot-clean the foam with mild soap and water, and machine-wash a removable cover on a gentle cycle. Never soak memory foam.

How long does a topper last?

A quality 3″ gel topper typically lasts 4–6 years. Cheaper convoluted foam often flattens within a year or two.
